Anxiety and Phobias

Anxiety is one of the most common health problems in the UK today, with more than 1 in 10 people likely to have a ‘disabling anxiety disorder’ at some stage in their life.

  • Social anxiety - is characterized by a host of physical symptoms and automatic thoughts that are elicited when the sufferer is in social or performance situation.
  • Agoraphobia - fear of public places or open areas and frequently including a panic attacks or fear of panic. People with agoraphobia characteristically become anxious if they even think about being in a particular situation and tend to avoid the situations which bring them anxiety or panic. Agoraphobia is highly variable in severity.
  • Generalised anxiety - a constant worrying that interferes with the ability to relax.
  • Panic attacks - feelings of anxiety, stress and panic which can occur at any time, usually for no obvious reason. It can lead to overwhelming feelings of fear, apprehension and anxiety.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) - typically causing abdominal pain, bloating or an altered bowel habit. For some people IBS can be disabling.
  • Insomnia – difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep for long enough to feel refreshed the next morning. There are a number of possible causes for insomnia, such as anxiety, a disrupted sleeping environment, or an underlying physical or psychological condition.
  • Phobia’s – an estimated 13% of the adult population will develop a phobia (a specific form of anxiety) at some point in their life. 1 in 10 children and young people aged 5-16 may also suffer. Many phobias can be treated within two  to three sessions (there are some phobias that present as an exception and may take more time for example, emetophobia may be treated within three sessions however it is often more complicated in that it develops into a social phobia which may require up to 12 sessions). Phobias include fear of flying; fear of being sick or vomiting; driving; buttons; elevators; spiders; fish; needles.
